Interpretation and Self-Criticism
Lee Byung-Wook

Abstract
The people of a divided Korea live in a paradoxical condition of ideological contrast. The North Korean people, who represent half of one body, are coerced into self-criticism in everyday life. Needless to say, self-observation and criticism are basic needs for introspection. But the pathological group process underlying our ideologically different societies is worrying. The analyst¡¯s interpretation and Marxist¡¯s self-criticism are very different in terms of methodology on self-approach. These basic differences have been studied to reach the following conclusions: 1. The analyst does not blame his/her analysand, but in self-criticism the individual is blamed by group members seriously. 2. The analyst interprets to the analysand with empathic understanding, but no self-criticism reveals mutual understanding. 3. The analyst keeps the analysand¡¯s secret and protects his/her privacy, but not in self-criticism. 4. The analyst respects the analysand¡¯s rights and self-esteem, but not in self-criticism. 5. The analyst explores the analysand¡¯s silence and negative attitude, but self-criticism forces open confession in front of group members. 6. The analyst scans his/her own countertransference, but not in self-criticism. 7. The analyst¡¯s stance is neutral, but not in self-criticism. 8. The analyst does not punish either verbally or non-verbally, but in self-criticism the individual is punished by the group. 9. Interpretation¡¯s goal is insight and psychological growth, but self-criticism¡¯s goal is maintenance of group stability and cohesion. 10. Interpretation¡¯s target is the analysand¡¯s unconscious, but self-criticism¡¯s target is the member¡¯s conscious. Here stress is placed on the pathologic group processes in self-criticism, for example, primitive splitting, projective identification, unconscious group envy, scapegoating, generalization, and compartmentalization etc. It is suggested that attention should be drawn to mutually deceptive group processes carried our in the name of self-criticism in any type of society or ideology, and that idealistic self-observation and criticism are acquired through mutual respect and understanding with properly integrated love and hate.
